One Four: Tibouchina 4 (Texture)

Week 4 in the One Four Challenge: Texture

Week 4 in the One Four Challenge: Texture

So here we are in the final week of September’s One Four Challenge. I’ve followed the suggestions of other bloggers and gone for a texture this time. Here’s what I did to get this look:

  • original image on bottom layer (color)
  • original image on 2nd layer (b/w)
  • add layer mask to b/w 2nd and with eraser at 10% opacity, brush away some of the right flower to let colour through; with eraser at 30% opacity, brush away the edges of the left flower to let colour through
  • open the texture image (“Grunge Cracks – cracked10”, from brusheezy.com/textures) and convert to b/w; add as layer on top of b/w flowers
  • on texture layer, blend mode is Pin Light, opacity is 80%
  • duplicate texture layer
  • apply Gaussian blur of 30pixels to first texture layer
  • add layer mask to top texture layer, and with large soft brush erase most of the texture from the flowers
  • add layer mask to bottom texture layer, and small soft brush erase most of the stronger cracks

Here are all the versions for comparison, plus the original.

A note about Tibouchinas: “Tibouchina /ˌtɪbuːˈkaɪnə/ is a genus of about 350 species of neotropical plants in the family Melastomataceae. They are trees, shrubs or subshrubs growing 0.5–25 m tall, and are known as glory bushes or glory trees. They are native to rainforests of Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America, especially Brazil. The name comes from an adaptation of a term for a member of this genus in an indigenous language of the Guianas.” (from Wikipedia)

And finally — I am on holiday this week with no Internet access, so will be unable to approve or respond to comments. But I’ll catch up when I return!

  1. Your week four edit looks like the symbol of life in the arid desert. Very nice edit! I thought that week 3 will be my favourite because I love the eyes with the flower, but now I can’t decide between week 3 and 4.

Nice job on the grunge background, its like they have just fallen off and have settled there. I like the softer approach to the colours too

  3. I like the eyes in week 3 best – very original. The contrast of the arid background and delicate petals in week 4 don’t feel right to me but what an interesting effect!

    • I was initially going to use a very different texture of watercolour effects, which I thought would work well with the delicate flowers, but I preferred the result with the cracked texture in the end.
